Happy Monday netizens. Time for another Muhibbah Malaysian Monday round-up. Time sure flies doesn’t it? Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to cook and participate this time, we really appreciate your efforts! My brain is still slightly jet-lagged so hopefully I've included everyone, if I didn’t it wasn’t intentional, just send me a quick email and I’ll add you in :)
In no particular order, here are our yummy entries:
Regular contributor Kristy from My Little Space joins us this month with three exciting twists on tradition. I love how she put an unusual spin on familiar favourites.
First she made naan bread, and flavoured it with dried jasmine flowers!
And for the recent mid-Autumn festival, she made mooncakes.
Some Shanghai mooncakes with a Nori crust and blue cheese crust! And the filling was unusual too - pineapple jam.
And some mooncake biscuits with sundried tomatoes added to the filling.
Speaking of unusual, our friend Cheah from No Frills recipes made me laugh with her take on Loh Mai Kai. Now, as some of you may know, Loh Mai Kai is a dish of sticky rice with chicken. Guess what Cheah did? She upsized the Lo Mai Kai by stuffing the sticky rice into a whole chicken! Very clever :)
Cheah also experimented with fresh pumpkin she’d bought from Cameron Highlands. She cooked two bundt cakes and had different colour results each time. Read the posts to find out more.
Pumpkin bundt cake which turned out brown, and Pumpkin walnut bundt cake which was more yellow.
Next, we welcome Hankerie, a newcomer to our round-up, who also made something pumpkiny. Check out the gorgeous yellow colour of the pumpkin bread.
Cooking with vegetables seems to be a theme this month, as we had an influx of ang koo kuih entries (red turtle kuih)
I think Lena from Frozen wings started the charge with her purple sweet potato ang koo kuih. (The recipe comes via Sonia of Nasi Lemak Lover who is also a sometime contributor to our round-up).
Lena also made a favourite snack of mine, crispy apam balik (peanut pancakes).
Inspired by Lena’s ang koo, Vivian from Vivian Pang Kitchen also made some pretty purple delicacies.
And for a savoury dish, Vivian contributed delicious looking char siew (roasted pork).
Another newcomer, Ah Tze from AwayofMind (welcome!) also made ang koo, but instead of sweet potato, he used beetroot. And managed to get the classic red colour of the kuih naturally. Very cool!
Janine of Not the Kitchen Sink joins us again with two different methods of making char siew (roast pork). (I seem to detect a certain theme this month ;P)
A roasted/ baked version, and a simmered version.
Next, we have Gertrude from My Kitchen Snippets. I really must issue a warning. Do not read Gert’s blog on an empty stomach. It will make you slightly delirious with hunger!
Take for example, this fried chicken made from ayam kampong (free range chicken). Oh my.
Or how about this creamy laksa dish (laksa lemak). Hungry yet?
Then read about her claypot loh shu fun dish. Loh shu fun are a kind of noodles which literally translate as rat noodles. Read Gert’s post to find out why and learn a more appetizing name for them :).
Say hello to Rita from Rita’s basket who joins us again this month with two entries.
First a chicken dish using the herb dang gui. Healthy and tasty.
If herby chicken dishes don’t appeal, I’m sure the oven grilled chicken wings will win you over. Don’t they look scrumptious?
